Makeup rules. The do’s and dont’s. The terms and conditions you have no intention of reading but tick that agree box anyway. It’s all shit. There was no polite way to word that. Makeup is a wonderful thing, whether you’re just the type to pop on a bit of BB cream and mascara then walk out the door, or if you rock bright eyeshadow on the daily with a hint of added sparkle because you gotta glooooow.
I’ve never been one for subtle makeup, occasionally I will but if you’ve seen my Instagram then you’ll know I’m a fan of colour, glitter and whatever the hell makes my makeup pop. Back in high school for about the whole of year 9 I wore baby pink eyeshadow in my crease with white on my eyelid and I loved it. I remember a boy telling me “wow I love your eye makeup” and still to this day I remember just how happy 14 year old Samm was hearing that.
Makeup is makeup, there are no rules. It’s art, create what you want however you want. Experiment, play around with products and colours to find a way that works for you. It really is that simple. Your face is your canvas and at the end of the day it all washes off and you can start again. Never be made to feel ashamed for how YOU choose to wear your makeup. Yes there’s advice and tips that may help the way your makeup looks or how you apply it (I’ve even shared posts myself!) but there’s a big difference between advice and makeup shaming.
Last year I created a makeup look using little pearls and NYX reposted it onto a few of their accounts from all over the world. I was over the moon, I’d never been noticed by such a big brand before so I decided to read the comments – BIG mistake. There was literally hundreds of comments like “eeew, it looks like acne”, “hahaha she has cysts on her eyes”, “@theirfriendsname wtf is this, it’s disgusting”. Truthfully, I cried. Yes there was also lots of really nice comments, but the negative ones really did stick with me and I started to doubt myself and my makeup skills.
After having a little cry with my mum, I realised what the heck am I doing?! I’m crying over comments left by people I’ve never met, people I know nothing about when I should just be taking in the lovely comments I had because NYX freakin reposted me. Since then my outlook really changed towards makeup, and honestly I really don’t care. If purple eyeliner with highlighter bright enough to give the tin man competition makes me feel good then I’ll do it. If I just want a little bit of concealer and some brow gel then I’ll go for that. Wear what makes you feel like you.
The same goes for the makeup ‘rules’ I hear. “Never use your finger to apply products”, Actually the heat from your finger warms up the product making it easier to blend into your skin. As long as your fingers clean, then it’s one handy (free) tool you don’t have to worry about losing or forgetting to pack. “Purple is for green eyes, orange is for blue blah blah blah” RIDICULOUS. Whilst certain colours can make your eye colour stand out more, that doesn’t mean you can’t wear a certain colour just because it’s not meant for your eye colour. Mixing products is also a good one, custom make your foundation by adding a few drops of oil to hydrate, liquid highlighter for extra glow. You do you.
So what’s the point of this post? Well I guess I was just fed up of reading the norm and I wanted to share how there really aren’t any rules, your face is your face and you should feel free wear (or not wear) your makeup however you want. Get creative, experiment with products and have fun! Don’t feel like you have to follow the crowd. Be confident, you’re beautiful and do whatever the hell makes you feel great! xo
