2 New Oily Skin Saviours From Urban Decay

Throughout my teens, oily skin was always something I had to deal with. I’m not just talking a little bit of shine, I’m talking full blown almost reflective level shine – it was a nightmare! As I became an adult and got my acne under control, stuck to a better skincare routine and I guess outgrew the awkward teen hormone age my skin became more normal to combination and stayed that way for a good few years, that was up until a few months ago.

What I guess is down to a change in weather, hormones, life, yada yada my t-zone (my nose to be specific) has become oilier than ever which really messed up my makeup routine. I’d usually reach for a hydrating primer and a light to medium dewy base but that just wasn’t working on my skin. Even foundations for oily skin weren’t matte enough to last. I now needed something super extreme level mattifying which gave me real throwback feels to my teen years.

As I’d tried all the primers, foundations and powders I already owned but nothing was giving me the results I wanted, I decided it was time to look into trying something new. I saw that Urban Decay had released a whole new line of primers and a mattifying powder so I decided to give them a try. Spoiler: I’m in love. I never knew it was possible to love products as much as I love these, they’ve become holy grail and that’s not a label I give out easily to a product!

First up is the De-Slick Complexion Primer. Now this actually has a lot of mixed reviews when you look it up online which I found surprising, but I think it all comes down to the application and learning how to make it work for you. This is an intense primer, it really does keep you shine free all day (I like to call it a deodorant for your face) so you only need to apply it to those areas you really need it.

I like to take half a pump (if that) on the back of my hand and apply it with my ring finger to my nose, chin and a little on my forehead. The key is to tap this into skin, don’t rub it or it can ball up. You only need a thin layer, less is more with this. I’ll then give it 1-2 minutes to dry down and then carry on with my makeup. As well as keeping me matte, it does a great job at smoothing my skin and hiding my pesky pores.

As much as I love the primer, the real stand out has to be The Velvetizer – this stuff is the shiz guys. The Velvetizer is classed as a mix-in medium designed to be mixed into your foundation turning the finish to velvety/matte, but I’ve actually been using this as a setting powder – something that UD also say you can do with this powder. I actually haven’t tried it mixed into my foundation yet purely because 1. it just works so well for me as a setting powder, 2. I keep forgetting it’s actually a mix-in medium not just a powder and 3. it’s a lot quicker and easier to apply it that way.

I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but in all my years of wearing makeup and all the powders I’ve tried from drugstore to highend… this is the best. THE BEST. This powder somehow manages to blur every single pore on my face, it makes my skin look so soft and it completely gets rid of that cakey look you can get (which you’d think adding a powder would do the opposite, but not with this bad boy). It keeps my skin matte but still looking natural without that heavy look, it really does make your skin look airbrushed! Relationship status: married to a translucent powder.

So as you can tell, I’ve been loving both of these new base products from Urban Decay – they’ve been killing it with the releases lately. The Naked Heat Palette is also mine so expect to hear about that soon!
