I can’t believe it’s already been over a week since we headed off to New York, it suddenly came round so fast after counting it down from 280 something days and I’m still not ready to accept the fact it’s actually over – can I go back to the shopping trips and endless cups of Dunkin’ Donuts Iced Coffee aka the best drink EVER. My brains still in holiday mode, I’m not ready to resume normal life yet and I’m already planning my next adventure so I thought I’d sit down and write up a post about the trip!
New York was incredible, more incredible than I’d expected it to be. I’ve wanted to go for so long, it’s always been the one place I’ve told my mum we will go to together one day so to actually be able to say we’ve been still feels unreal. We only had 3 days so we had to try and get as much done in that time as we possibly could which was a challenge but we did it. I was going to take my proper camera but I was too worried I’d end up losing it so here’s a little collection of pictures I took on my phone, going back I do wish I’d taken more pictures now!
The trip started on Monday 3rd as we travelled up to Heathrow for our flight that evening. If you know me, you’ll know I love planes, I love flying and I could happily sit at an airport watching planes take off and land all day (I’m judging me too). This trip was major for me because we upgraded our flight to fly on my favourite aircraft, the Boeing 747, so you can imagine how excited I was when I actually got to fly on one for the first time!
Fan girling aside it was a good flight actually although we did hit a lot of turbulence. After the travelling we’d done that day and the fact it was a night flight I only managed to watch a film, an episode of Pretty Little Liars and then I fell asleep. I never sleep on planes especially through turbulence so I must have been half dead, snoring and looking like a hot mess in front of the other passengers but sometimes you’ve just got to role with it. When we arrived in NYC it was about 3am as we’d been delayed taking off so we headed straight to the hotel and off to bed.
On the first day we got up and headed over to Times Square, it was only a 15 minute walk from our hotel (we stayed at The Watson on 57th Street, it was alright for a basic hotel but I wouldn’t stay there again) and it was time to do some shopping! I knew Times Square has a great Sephora so that was one of our first stops, and it didn’t disappoint. I spent way too long in their, probably way too much money as well but for a first time Sephora experience I honestly thought I’d walked into makeup heaven! Expect haul posts soon of course!
After visiting the shops we wanted, we just had a look around the area and I think it was at this point the shock hit us that we were actually stood in Times Square, in real life, not looking at a picture, what the hell. Looking at the pictures as I write this post is bringing back all the feels and I miss it already! If I could hop on a plane right now I honestly would, I never thought I could love a city as much as I did.
Once we finished being 100% tourists, we went for some food at Applebee’s (the blue hawaiin long island iced tea was incredible and I’d like one right now, that would be fab) we headed back towards our hotel and found a CVS so obviously ya girl had to pick up some drugstore bits, honestly me and my sister must have spent a solid 45 minutes trying to calm ourselves down and actually decide what to buy. It was like a makeup lovers dream! After that we went back to the hotel and ended up falling asleep at 7pm which was annoying as we felt like we wasted an evening but I think the travelling + the excitement + all the walking caught up with us and we were out of it.
The following day started at 4:30am, we all woke up round about the same time as our bodies were still used to UK times so it was an early start. We took our time getting ready then headed off for breakfast. We then headed down to the 9/11 memorial and museum which was lovely to see but also incredibly hard to see at the same time. It is a rather emotional thing walking through the museum as you can’t even begin to imagine what it must have been like but I’m really glad I got to see the beautiful memorial.
Once we’d done that we headed into Westfield which is nearby and did a little bit more shopping. When we walked in this stall selling prints caught my eye so me and mum went over and I fell in love instantly. They’re from Verrier Handcrafted and I ended up picking up two of them as I just couldn’t decide which one to go for. I wanted something to remember the trip by and these are perfect, I’m going to frame them and they can go up in my little dressing table/desk area.
I obviously took another trip to Sephora but I only left with two things (I know, I’m just as shocked as you are) and then we had a look in a few of the other shops then we headed back towards the hotel. We actually got a cab as we wanted the full New York experience, we had to be full on tourists during the trip experiencing every aspect of the New York life obvs. My stomach annoyingly started having a flare up and I was having really sharp pains and it bloated out which was so annoying so I needed to have a little lay down as I really wasn’t feeling great.
After having a little rest break back at the hotel we decided to head out again. I still wasn’t feeling 100% which was so annoying so we took our time and had a little walk around Central Park. It was beautiful, it felt weird walking through such a beautiful park in the middle of such a busy city but we got some lovely pictures and it was a lovely way to spend the afternoon. We sat down for a while, my little brother explored and we walked for what felt like 40 hours but it was probably more like 40 minutes.
That evening we wanted to do a boat tour to see the Statue of Liberty but I just wasn’t feeling well enough which was so annoying as it was something I’d loved to have done. We did go out to a pizza restaurant near our hotel which was nice, my brother loves pizza so he was in heaven, I must admit it was really freakin good pizza. We then headed back to our hotel and had another early night, the early starts and lots of walking killed us!
On the last day we didn’t know we’d have time to actually get a lot of stuff done as we wasn’t sure what time our taxi was picking us up but when we found out it wasn’t until 4pm we decided to make the most of the fact we actually had some time to do something. We wanted to do something touristy like the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building but the weather was horrendous, it was chucking it down and I don’t just mean a little bit of rain. We decided to do something indoors so after about an hour trying to decide we settled with heading to a mall, it was either that or the cinema!
We wanted to go to Bath & Body Works and my brother wanted to go GameStop so I found the Queens Center which had both so we decided to get the subway over there. The subway was alright actually, I was worried at first but it was easier than the underground, certainly not as busy and a lot cheaper which was a bonus. Once we arrived it was time to do even more shopping and they had a NYX store which I was so glad to see! The US seems to get products a while before us plus its a lot cheaper over there so I made the most of it and picked a few bits up.
After we’d finished shopping I saw there was a Cheesecake Factory which I’ve always seen Amercian YouTubers talk about so I practically dragged everyone inside. I have worlds biggest sweet tooth so I went for the chocolate hazelnut crunch cheesecake and it was to die for! I already miss the food and drinks from America.
When we got back to the hotel it was time to head to the airport. We had another night flight but I felt so heartbroken leaving New York. I really did fall in love with the city and I wish we had more time. 3 days really wasn’t long enough, there was so much more I wish we could have done and seen but it’s been a tough time health wise which was all down to a matter of bad timing but I’ve all ready said to mum about going back and that’s certainly something we’ll do in the future.
For me the highlights had to be Times Square, obviously Sephora and CVS (makeup is life) as well as drinking my bodyweight in Dunkin’ Donuts Iced Coffee. It was lovely spending time with my family and I can’t believe I can actually say I’ve been to New York, it still doesn’t feel real. It was magical, it was everything I thought it would be and more. San Francisco, Florida and LA are next on my travel list, basically any part of America will do!
Anybody planning a trip to NYC soon? If so, feel free to bring me along too!
